Faribault vs. Twin Cities Wedding Venues: What You Save and What You Trade

Most couples touring The 3 Ten start their search in Minneapolis or St. Paul. They look at downtown venues first — the warehouses, the hotel ballrooms, the historic mansions — and somewhere along the way the math gets uncomfortable.

Then they hear about us. The 3 Ten is in downtown Faribault, 50 minutes south of Minneapolis. Not the metro. Not the suburbs. Faribault.

The fair question they ask is: "Is the drive worth it?"

Here's the honest answer, because it depends on what you care about.

The pricing difference is real

The same wedding that costs $9,000 to $14,000 in venue rental in downtown Minneapolis runs $3,500 to $5,500 at The 3 Ten.

That's not a small gap. On a $35,000 wedding budget, the venue difference alone is $5,500 to $9,000 — money that goes to your photographer, your honeymoon, your house, your debt, or whatever else.

Most Twin Cities venues also have stricter rules about caterers, bar service, and decor. We're more flexible across the board because we don't have the overhead of downtown rent.

What your guests actually trade

This is the part nobody talks about honestly: your guests trade some convenience.

Faribault is 50 minutes from downtown Minneapolis via I-35. About the same from St. Paul. Roughly 60 minutes from MSP airport. Not nothing, but not the Boundary Waters either.

What that actually means for guests:

  • Out-of-town guests fly into MSP and drive an hour to a hotel in Faribault or Owatonna. A Lyft or Uber is about $80 one way. Most guests rent cars.

  • Local guests drive themselves or rideshare. Group transportation (a shuttle from a Twin Cities hotel) is an option many couples use; expect $800 to $1,500 for one round-trip charter for 30 guests.

  • People who would have walked from a downtown hotel to your venue now drive instead. That's the real difference.

In return, parking is free. Within three blocks of The 3 Ten there are over 400 free parking spots, surface lots, and street parking. Most surface lots allow overnight parking. Nobody is paying $30 to park downtown or walking ten blocks in heels.

What the venue itself trades

What downtown venues give you and we don't:

  • A hotel block within walking distance

  • A skyline view

  • Restaurants and bars for the after-party

What we give you that downtown rarely does:

  • Original 1895 industrial character — pressed tin ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick — that hasn't been remodeled five times

  • Two completely independent event spaces (the Ballroom and the Rooftop Loft) under one roof

  • A rooftop patio with downtown Faribault views (smaller than Minneapolis, more charming)

  • Direct access to the wedding party owners who restored the building themselves

  • Real flexibility on caterer, decor, timeline, and rules

  • A guest experience that feels like a destination instead of an event hall

The "destination wedding 30 miles from home" sweet spot

Here's the thing most couples don't realize until they're touring:

A wedding at The 3 Ten works like a mini destination wedding for Twin Cities guests. Your friends and family book a hotel in Faribault, treat the weekend like a getaway, and stay through Sunday brunch instead of driving home at 11 p.m.

For couples whose families are scattered across the country, this turns out to be a feature, not a bug. Out-of-state guests are flying in anyway. Local guests get a night away. The couple gets a venue that doesn't share a wall with another event.

When the drive isn't worth it

We'll be straight with you. If most of your guest list works downtown, lives in the metro, and would prefer not to drive an hour to a wedding, a Twin Cities venue is the right call. We tell people this on tours.

If you have a lot of older guests with mobility issues, the drive plus parking plus historic stairs may not be the right setup.

If you're set on a particular downtown aesthetic — modern hotel ballroom, glass walls, skyline — go find that. We can't be that.

When the drive is absolutely worth it

If your budget is feeling stretched at the downtown venues you've toured, drive down. The math is real.

If you want a venue with character you can't get downtown for any price, drive down.

If you want owners who tour you themselves, answer the phone themselves, and care about your wedding because they own the place — that's us.

The 3 Ten is fifty minutes south of Minneapolis. Take the drive once, take a tour, and decide.
